Who was the first NASCAR driver featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated? Dale Earnhardt? Nope. Richard Petty? Try again.
How about Curtis Turner?
Long before NASCAR was recognized as a mainstream sport, the legendary Turner was the first driver to make the cover of Sports Illustrated. Turner was the subject of a nine-page feature article, entitled “Curtis Lives!” that appeared in the February 26, 1968, issue.
Author Kim Chapin offered readers an in-depth look at the driver who was as well-known for his parties as his exploits on the race track. His early years hauling moonshine along the back roads of the Appalachians… His success in the timber business… His role in the building of Lowe’s Motor Speedway… And of course, his ability to handle a race car like few before or since… It’s all there in this riveting article.
The hard-driving, hard-living Turner is still regarded by many to be the greatest natural driving talent in NASCAR history. He posted 17 Cup victories in his career, and in 1956 alone won a record 22 of 38 races in NASCAR’s old Convertible division. In 1965, he won the inaugural race at Rockingham in just his third super speedway appearance after a four-year suspension for attempting to unionize NASCAR drivers. Turner died in a private plane crash October 4, 1970.

How many times did Don "The Snake" Prudhome and Tom "The Mongoose" McEwen race against each other?

In 1972 it did’nt get any better in Funny Car racing than this pairing at Irwindale Raceway!! Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen in the far lane, racing his long time rival Don “The Snake” Prudhomme in the near lane. It seems somewhat ironic that Miller Beer, which has a brewery located on this very site now days, sponsors Prudhomme’s NHRA World Champion Top Fueler which Larry Dixon Jr. drives.
4 times - can you believe it?

The racing farmer from Carruthers, California
The answer isn't Red Byron, Bob Flock or Lee Petty. It's Ray Elder, driving a family owned Dodge Charger at Riverside International Raceway, January 10, 1971. NASCAR's premier stock car series became the Winston Cup that year when it received support from R.J. Reynolds. The first race in those days was not the Daytona 500 in February. It was the Motor Trend 500 on the 2.62-mile road course in Riverside, Calif., and Dodge was there to take home the trophy.
